Here are the steps to finish your rustic hardwood floor

• First you have to remove all your things and everything from the room because sanding the wood will produce some dust, so it is better to lay a tarpaulin down the room.
• Remove the baseboard carefully from the room using a carpenter’s pry bar and a hammer. Don’t forget to mark the each piece for easy identification. Check the floor carefully for damage.
• Then clean the baseboards with close attention because if the boards have any obstructions it leads to bad paint. And after cleansing keep it aside to dry completely.
• After removing all the baseboards just hit the floor with 3-foot length of chain or take an old key ring and wing it on the floor or with a help of hand scraper make some extra scratches and dings on the floor. Do it throughout the room, actually this is done to damage the floor too much.
• Then using a floor drum machine sander like 80-grit sandpaper removes all the paint and stain from the existing hardwood floor. Usually, floor drum sanding machine which is an over-size belt sander is mostly used to remove the wood quickly.
• The perimeter of the room is sanded using the flooring edge machine sanding and the same grit sandpaper.
• Repeat this procedure for about 5 and 6 times using different grit sandpapers, such as 120grit and 180grit sandpaper. Make a point to clean the boards in-between passes. Do not fill the dings and cracks that remains on the broads.
• Now stain the floor using a rustic color and rub out the rotory sander extra stain as you move. And let the stain dry and then proceed your next step.
• With a low luster polyurethane floor finish on the floor thoroughly.  Then paint a lambswool applicator on the floor and it should be done following the directions mentioned in the product label.
• Repeat this staining procedure for at least five minutes that is about five layers is usually needed to finish the rustic hardwood floor.
• Now reinstall the baseboards as it was earlier.
